1995 Epinephelus Lanceolatus, The world's first success

Giant Grouper (Epinephelus Lanceoletus) is call Tamakai in Japan and the Chinese name of Saddle Stripe Grouper. This species grows mainly in Southeast Asia area. It is also found in Taiwan waters occasionally, but with limited quantity. Due to over crop, the production in these years is reduced to under supplied.
After hormone treatment, this species can reach artificial mature and natural laying and the fertilizing rate and hatching rate are both higher than 85%. The fry nurturing manner of is similar to ordinary grouper. The successful development of this species could have substantial effect on the cultivation of grouper in Taiwan. The main reasons are this species grows fast (3-5 Taiwanese Catty in the first year and 10 to 15 Taiwanese Catty in the 2nd year) ,high priced (about NTD800~1000 per Taiwanese Catty and main markets are in overseas area (Japan, Hong Kong,  Mainland China, South Korea and SoutheastAsia countries). It is said, this kind of fish is a nutrition supplement and most of players of Suma, Wrestling and Boxing need to eat this fish one week before the competition, as it strengthens physical strength and endurance. To prove it, just consume this fish for a period oftime.

Season of laying egg of Giant Grouper is between May and November and the laying time is between 8:00 pm and 12:00 pm. The fertilized egg is in sphere, separated, floating and transparent. The diameter is between 0.8 and 0.89 mm . The hatching time is substantially affected by temperature. This is similar to ordinary grouper. Under 28 to 29°C water temperature, the hatching time is 19 hr 36

min. The hatched fry has body length of 1.65 and 1.91 mm. Yolk is absorbed completely 82 hours after hatching with body length of 2.91 mm. They may be fed with fertilized egg of oyster, small rotifers or young oyster. Fries are mostly clustered in the middle and surface level and they likes to find food along wall of pond. Grownup fishes are suitable for cultivation in land side pond and net cage on sea . Feeds may be fresh fish or mix with soft feed of eel. The feed volume is about 2~ 3 % of body weight. Since this species is featured with fast growth and good resistance to environment and disease, also with good taste of meat. It is top grade sea food. Successful development of this species has brought not only new opportunity to the aquatic cultivation, but also moved a big step for the research of Grouper in the world.
